A citizen-led initiative for affordable housing
This measure is a community-led plan targeted at tackling our affordable housing shortage and reducing homelessness countywide. It focuses on creating more affordable housing and expanding mental health and addiction services for unhoused people, and it provides for public oversight to protect against government waste.
LA needs more affordable housing. Now.
LA’s worsening homelessness crisis is being driven by skyrocketing rent prices and a serious lack of affordable housing. This measure will help create more affordable housing to keep up with demand while offering social services and rent subsidies to help folks keep their housing or transition out of homelessness.
Built-in safeguards against government waste
Unlike past measures, this one emphasizes public control and government accountability to protect against government waste. With mandatory performance updates, spending reports, and annual independent audits, the public will be able to track the measure’s performance and repeal it if the measure doesn’t meet expectations.
A ½ cent sales tax to replace an existing ¼ sales tax
For the average LA County household, the additional ¼ cent amounts to $5 more each month that would be used to create affordable housing, expand public healthcare, and help move people off the streets and into stable housing long term. This tax won’t apply to certain essentials, including groceries, EBT purchases, medicine, diapers, rent, and gas.
Measure A is an initiative developed by communities and experts
This measure was created by community members and housing experts, and the public—not politicians—will decide if this passes, oversee its implementation, and ultimately repeal the measure if necessary. In short, voters have the first and final say when it comes to this ballot measure.
